Atchafalaya at Idlewild Golf Course in Patterson, Louisiana served as the host for the second USSSA Golf Junior Tour event on the weekend of September 18-19. Some 14 golfers from throughout the State of Louisiana braved the tough South Louisiana layout, and provided the USSSA multi-sports organization a great junior golf event for its second championship tournament.
Pop-A-Lock, Louisiana USSSA, Lafayette Coca Cola and Talk-N T’Shirts served as the official sponsors for this junior golf outing, and by responses of players, parents and spectators, the USSSA is off to a great start in their newest sports endeavor.
In Boys 15-18 competition, Frank Wood, Jr., Lake Charles, distanced the field as the West Louisiana competitor posted scores of 79 and 80 (159 total), to claim a 13 stroke win over second place finisher, Skye Mejia, Lafayette (89-83-172). Claiming the third place hardware was Koby Percle, Morgan City, who posted 90, 85 and a 175 total.
In Boys 12-14 action, Lafayette native, Drew Gonzales, completed the 36 hole event with a 146 total (71-75), and defeated second place finisher Derrick Pillai (74-77), Metairie, by five strokes. Most impressive was Gonzales’ Saturday play, as he posted an impressive one under par round. Claiming the third place was Jevon Perry, Iowa with a 197 (102-95) two day total.
Boys 9-11 action only saw two competitors, but competition was keen. Young Daniel Pillai, Metairie, managed to post an outstanding two day (18 holes) total of 84 (39-45) and claimed a 22 stroke victory over Cade Thibodaux, Patterson, who posted a 106 two day score..
