Cyclones 14U team wins state baseball title

The Lincoln Cyclones 14U baseball team went 4-1 and won the USSSA AAA Silver state championship in Columbus, Neb., over the Fourth of July weekend.

Entering the tournament as the bottom seed, the Cyclones beat the second-seeded Columbus Mariners 8-3 in 9 innings and lost to the top-seeded Kings Wood Thunder 5-4 .

Seeded sixth after pool play, the Cyclones beat the third-seeded Grand Island Riverdogs in the quarterfinals 8-1 , then beat the second-seeded UBA Gladiators Black team 3-1 . Advancing to the championship game, the Cyclones upset the overall No. 1 seed, Millard Blue 8-0.

In bracket play, the Cyclones gave up only two runs, getting stellar pitching by Trey Utrup, Brandon Doty, Brock Johnson and Jaryd Trumbley. Cyclone pitchers were supported by a solid defense that committed only two errors in the three bracket games .

The team will conclude its season by competing in the Global World Series, which started Wednesday and runs through Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa.
